Match Report

SEATTLE (Jan. 24th) – A deep drive to the Suburbs of the Suburbs, terrible weather and poor finishing made for a poor performance and a devastating 2-2 draw for Work Doers FC. For the second time ever, WDFC played at Grasslawn Park and once again pitched a draw. In their last appearance at the field, WDFC drew 0-0 with the Green Machine in the GSSL summer session of 2009.

In its last meeting with DaKine Futbol Club, WDFC was taken down 1-0. From the get go WDFC dominated possession and controlled the pace of the game pretty easily. And despite missing several players and fielding greenhorn keeper Matt Clark, The Doers seemed poised for a blowout victory -- but that would not be the case.

On almost each possession WDFC fired a shot on target, amassing 25 shots throughout the 90-minute ordeal. Sadly only two would find the back of the net.

“We just couldn’t put it all together today,” said Doer Jesse Ramos who drives from the boonies to play. “The build up was great, but we were missing in the end.”

On the other side of the ball, DaKine would score off its only two real chances on goal. The first coming in the 15th minute on an unfortunate mix-up that left Keeper Matt Clark one on one without a chance and the second coming just ten minutes later when a DaKine winger was left unmarked to fire home from 25 yards out.

“He really ripped that shot,” said Clark who slays things. “I tried to catch it, but there was juts too much pace on the shot.”

Conrad fires home from 10 yards out. The goal was Conrad's second of the game.

Now trailing by two goals, WDFC would turn to tireless striker Mark Conrad to light the comeback trail. In the 34th minute Conrad would strike for his first of the game. Conrad was sprung free down the right wing after a defensive stop from captain Jon Augustavo. Conrad took several touches before beating the steady DaKine keeper.

“That kind of turned the tide for us,” said Conrad who hunts quails. “We got the momentum and pretty much dominated after that.”

Going into half the Doers were down 2-1, but could have easily been up by several goals if not for poor finishing on their own parts.

Down a goal WDFC hoped to right their finishing wrongs but the poor play continued into the final 45. Chance after chance was created, with attackers Elliot O’Connor, Blake Ambrose, Augustavo, Pat Oiye and Jesse Ramos terrorizing defenders.

The attack was unbelievably fluid, but the final piece was missing almost every time. The only bright moment came in the 55th minute when WDFC new boy Paul Mai sent Conrad through for an easy finish. Mai, who started the game at defensive mid, made a quick stop and hit a perfectly weighted ball to the gazelle-like striker. Conrad had no difficulty finishing the masterful pass, moving him to four goals on the pubescent season.

“Good finish,” said Mai who is a man of few words. “….”

Now even, WDFC pushed harder than a pregnant woman in labor to bag the game winner; with almost every attacking player failing to finish some sort of gimme. Shot after shot was saved, hit over, turned away by the woodwork or just missed altogether.

As time ticked away three separate strikes from O’Connor, Ramos and Conrad were turned away by the frame.

Doer Captain Jon Augustavo chases down a DaKine player. Augustavo had trouble balancing a roster of players who never show up on time or tell him if they aren't coming so he can replace them that week.

At the final whistle several Doers crumpled to the ground, devastated by the result after such a dominant offensive output.

Despite the poor result Defenders Eric Englund, Vincent Tilotta and Mid Mark Thinnes had good games, pleasing manager Augustavo.

“That was a tough game,” said Augustavo. “Never been so frustrated after a game, but it was nice to see Vinny and Mark do work at wingback. Vinny saved a goal off the line I believe. Pretty good game for him.”

Next up is Naked City FC at Memorial Stadium for what could be the battle for first place.
