Match ReportSEATTLE (Jan 31st) – under overcast skies, WDFC laid an egg in the highly anticipated match against table toppers Naked City FC. Sporting and undefeated record and a 10 to 1 goal differential, Naked appeared a difficult match up for the boys in black, and that they were shutting out WDFC for the first time in a long time.
Playing with its full strength squad manager Jon Augustavo appeared optimistic, but his zeal quickly disappeared after a mistake lead to an early Naked goal. With the NFC keeper booming 70-yard kicks, he was able to beat the backline and spring loose a striker for an easy one on one finish. Keeper Martin Sanchez was caught off guard by the mammoth kick and was unable to close on the fast approaching striker.
Down a goal early, WDFC was unable to find any cohesion or finishing touch. All credit goes to NFC for shutting down nearly every attack and packing the backline to stop the dynamic duo of Mark Conrad and frequent late arriver Jesse Ramos.
Throughout the game, WDFC would produce several goal-scoring chances but the final moment of magic was always missing.
In the 30th minute Naked would strike again, this time from outside the box. A Naked striker was left unmarked and he hammered a shot home from nearly 20 yards out. This would not be the first time the talented Naked striker would score. Just minutes from the half he was left unmarked again and blasted home from nearly the same spot.
Down 3-0 at half, The 22’s appeared destined for a blowout. However, WDFC would play the next 45 with fire and hold NFC from scoring and nearly put up several goals of their own.
One of the few bright spots for WDFC was the play of striker Jesse Ramos and defender Nick Augustavo and Kevin Sigley. The three provided several key stops or attacks and helped keep The Doers in the game.
Next up are the Flying Squirrels who have never faced Seattle’s favorite club.
Game Notes: Captain Jon Augustavo left the game, citing a ballbag injury. Striker Drew Triplett made his first appearance for WDFC after impressing manager Augustavo in his earlier reserves blowout for Work in Progress FC. Copyright 2010 Work Doers FC |
