Match Report

SEATTLE (Feb. 7th)—With a depleted squad WDFC was able to upend a feisty Flying Squirrels squad. Playing at Twin Ponds, where the Doers have never lost, WDFC kept an unlikely clean sheet – leading to man of the match honors for utility-man Derek Long who manned-up and took the spot between the posts for his third goose egg in his illustrious career with the Frontier Room’s legendary bartender Danyo’s favorite club. The game also marked the return of Blake “Tito” Ambrose to the scoring sheet for the first time since November 21st against Ballard FC in the GSSL division 3A playoffs.

Tangents aside, the game itself was a battle that raged back and forth with the Doers failing to capitalize on several occasions, but the backline of Eric Yates, Eric Englund, Kevin Sigley and Nick Augustavo would provide ample support to keep it clean.

Doer Matt Clark eludes a Squirrel. Clark was deadly in the air on the day.

“Nick has been impressing me out there,” said Mid James Augustavo who owns a purse dog. “For a brutish baseball player who never played soccer he seems a natural out there. And now with Captain Sig anchoring the backline, we are playing pretty good… bro.”

From the opening kickoff the Doers pressed the tempo creating an early chance for captain Jon Augustavo, who slotted in at striker for the day. Devastatingly, Augustavo was unable to finish the chance after a last gasp slide tackle from a Squirrel defensemen.

“Jesse played me through real nice,” said Augustavo who now wears skinny jeans occasionally. “I just couldn’t corral the ball quick enough to beat the last guy.”

Next up, it was Ramos who would fail to convert a chance of his own. After a quick counter attack, Ramos sprung loose down the right flank. Spying the keeper off the line the Curly haired fro-man fired a curling shot from 18 yards only to be turned away by the woodwork. Throughout the game, Ramos pressed the Squirrel backline but was unable to mark the score-sheet.

“I was running my ass off,” said Ramos who was uncharacteristically on time for the game. “I just couldn’t find the back of the net, but it’s coming soon enough.”

Finally in the 35th minute Das Wunderkind, Ambrose would strike for his 28th career Work Doer Goal. On a Manchester United-esque counter attack, the Doers would string together several slick passes for the beautifully constructed goal, harkening back to Senegal’s epic goal at the 2002 World Cup in Korea. On a Squirrel corner, Doer midfielder Matt “Slayus” Clark lambasted a header deep out of the area. It was quickly corralled and sent up field to a streaking Ramos who beat two defenders before sending a hotshot cross to Ambrose for a classy finish.

Doer Nick Augustavo rises up for a header. Augustavo dominated the backlin from touchline to touchline.

“Great work by all,” said Ambrose who loves chili. “I’m happy we won first and foremost, but I’m super pumped I scored too.”

With the lead, WDFC hunkered down to hold onto the small lead. Thanks to the efforts of Long and the backline quartet, Bogey Lowenstein’s boys were able to close on the shutout keeping their place in the GSSL 2A table.

Notes: Striker Mark Conrad missed the game for a Villa Academy alumni potato sack race. Conrad reportedly placed second in the six-foot and over division, winning $20 gift certificate to the Erotic Bakery.
